With additional material from Hatsukope School, Denuand St Anthony’s School, Denu.

The Where I Live DVD is designed for use on a classroom whiteboard. It supports the Key Stage Two Geography syllabus and the Key Stage 1 and 2 Citizenship Curriculum; it also contributes towards Key Stage 2 History Curriculum and Key Stage 2 English Curriculum.

The material gives children insight into all aspects of life in the Welsh village of Tregarth, and in the Ghanaian town of Denu. Through considering these very different localities, pupils are also encouraged to make comparisons with, and reflect more deeply about, their own lives in their own home towns or villages.

SoundAffects is an audio project; the emphasis is on pupils listening to the voices of their counterparts describing their lives, and interacting with children at their linked schools. However, on the DVD this child-driven material is also supplemented by interviews with two adult geographers; Bryn Tomos, from Gwynedd in Wales, and Prosper Asima, from the town of Beki, near Denu in the Volta Region of Ghana.

Children using this material gain improved listening skills and their imaginations are stimulated as they engage with child-driven descriptions of life in very different cultures. They gain insight into the differences between their own lives and those of their counterparts, and are also encouraged to consider the things they have in common. The discussions prompted by the recordings also benefit the development of communication and advocacy skills.

The DVD is split into six units; Environment, Food and Markets, Climate and School, Language and Nationality, History and Culture, and Tourism and Change. Each unit consists of a number of short clips of audio material. The children first listen to the recordings without any pictorial context. After each clip, a series of questions appears on screen (followed by answers where appropriate). These questions are designed to ensure that children are listening properly to the audio, also to elicit thoughts and comparisons with life in their own home town or village, as prompted by hearing children talk about life in Denu or Tregarth. The questions also give children an opportunity to consider their images of people and places. There are also additional optional exercises and project work included in the Teachers Notes and Resources section of the DVD.

Finally, when the children have discussed the audio material and completed, they then listen again to the audio. This time the clips are accompanied by some still photos which may - or may not - confirm their inner pictures of people and places.

The Teachers Notes and Resources file contains a full array of exercises and resources for additional work based around these units. These range from information about Denu and Tregarth, map exercises, art work and comparison charts for the children to complete, to fuller projects on currency, language and local history and culture.
