About Us
Want to connect with other children in your country and around the world? SoundAffects enables you to share your story and to listen to other children’s stories from many different backgrounds and cultures. SoundAffects also provides fantastic audio resources and lesson plans on a wide range of themes, from pets to climate change. We link to other online educational and linking communities, such as Rafi.ki, Gemin-i and BBC World Class.
SoundAffect's Story
SoundAffects was launched in 2008 by two BBC World Service broadcasters, Penny Boreham and Caroline Swinburne. Their goal was to connect children, young people and schools around the world using professionally recorded audio. Their vision was for young people to be able to understand global issues by listening, and responding to, other children’s experiences in different parts of the world.
SoundAffects raises children’s awareness about each other’s lives. Its child-centred approach means that its work is tailored to young people’s needs. SoundAffects listens to the experts – the children and young people themselves. Have a look at our video to give you a better understanding of what we do.
The Approach of SoundAffects
The aim of SoundAffects is to facilitate widespread lines of communication between children. Our team of project leaders use their wide ranging and long experience in radio production, film and photography to allow children to express themselves and reveal their original ideas and opinions. The project leaders see themselves as the catalysts, allowing children to listen to each other and respond to each other.
We use the skills of professionals to encourage children to articulate their ideas sometimes in quite long interviews (to allow for interesting tangents from the children and to allow us to follow their stream of consciousness). Children also produce and record their own material alone. The material is edited down and produced into a lasting resource.
